My work is informed by the interconnectedness of nature and natural phenomena: the tides, wind, water, the seasons, the sun, impermanence. I feel profoundly connected with my natural surroundings. The work I create is a tribute to the breathtaking landscapes and natural shapes that simply are, without needing more.
I enjoy making colourful work and my surroundings influence my palette. When I first came to New Zealand many years ago, I was blown away by the bright light and the vibrant colours of nature. It was one of the reasons I migrated here from the Netherlands. As Kenya Hara writes in his exquisite book ‘White’: “The world is like a sumptuous feast of every imaginable color. The freshness of the trees, the sparkle of the surface of water, the intense color of fruits, ../. – each and every one of these colors is dear to us”. I believe in showing beauty that is often in small things, right before our eyes, because that is what makes me happy. Maybe my photographs help people notice something special. With that I mean simplicity, a sense of peace, a tiny common place shared by humanity.
