"I am always looking for beauty, in the sense so aptly described by artist philosopher Etel Adnan: “Beauty is an inner sense and it makes us happy. It is not complicated; we need it. It is more than shapes and colour. It’s more than what you see. Your total inner world.”. I feel deeply connected with my natural surroundings. They give me a sense of belonging to this world. I observe, and am enchanted by, the elegance and colours of small things like leaves, flowers, trees or rocks and, equally, the vastness of a particular place which makes us feel small by comparison. I want to capture both the power and the beauty of it and cry out: “look!, look!”. Because “everything of value is defenceless” (a well-known line written by Dutch poet Lucebert). Everything that truly has value is also vulnerable. It is there, it exists in the now. It is easy to overlook what really matters. Simplicity, simple beauty and small happiness are important; living attentively in the present so that we can give our surroundings the attention and care they deserve."
